First Dental Appointment

I have been putting off taking Addy to the dentist forever! She was supposed to go with the other kids in June but I had my surgery that day and I didn't want Jarika to have to take her. So, in we went today! As the majority of you know, Addy is significantly orally defensive. She absolutely despises anyone messing in her mouth! The ped always has to hold her nose to look into her throat! This girl has serious jaw muscles!

The cute little hygienist came out to get Addy. (I can't wait until Jarika is that cute little hygienist!) Addy was sitting on the floor and she held her hand down for Addy to take it to go with her. Uh, Addy doesn't walk (YET!). She picked Addy up and she was ready to go! She said she would let me know if she needed me. 5 minutes later I was needed, shocker! Addy would NOT open her mouth at all. So I held her hands and sang to her while she got her teeth cleaned. It definitely wasn't a perfect cleaning but went much better than I expected! She had some build up on her two front bottom teeth that I can never get with her toothbrush. She was able to get it off with the metal scrapper thing without a huge fight! She couldn't get to her back teeth, I never can either, this girl clamps down big time! She does love to have her teeth brushed but the molars are tough.

The dentist came in and counted Addy's teeth and she has all of the ones she's supposed to! A lot of kids with DS have missing teeth. We didn't do x-rays so we're unsure of her permanent teeth but so far so good. The main problem we foresee with Addy is that she has a Class 3 Malocclusion (Underbite) which will hopefully correct some on her own but surgery on down the road is a possibility :( Overall the dentist was very pleased with the condition of her teeth, they look healthy, no cavities or major plaque!

Glad it went better than expected. I am surprised that they took her back without you though. Alayna sits on my lap and watches me get my teeth cleaned then the dentist counts her teeth and looks around just for fun in hopes that next year on her real first visit it will go well.

Zoey is,again, much like Addy.Do you tire of me saying that?Anyway,we had her first appointment with the dentists at Children's about 6 months ago.Not bad.Mainly I think, because she is not an oral feeder. They laid her back, head in the doctor's lap,on a pillow,me at her feet. She screamed but at least they got a good look. And,surprise, surprise,Zoey is missing a tooth.Top,right next to her front tooth ... Bummer.Makes for an interesting teeth shifting and now smile!

Love the picture.Love to all.

Parker's had most of his dental work done while under general anesthesia. And you know, I've never thought to ask if he had all of his teeth. Nobody mentioned anything about it.

WAHOO! Yeah for a better than expected visit. Always a good thing. So far Joy is missing one - and not sure about Bell yet. :)

Sounds like a great checkup! My kids all love the dentist for some reason (anna included) -- we are a weird family =)

I'm glad to hear that Addy's dental visit went well. Well, Addy's healthy teeth should be credited to you. You've done great in keeping her teeth healthy. So when will be her second visit?

Well, some kids tend to be anxious and uncooperative on the first few moments of a dental visit. It is apt for parents to be on their side and hold their hands during those periods. This can help lessen their anxiety and make them feel secured. Congrats on Addy's good dental condition!:)

This is one tough, young girl! But it is normal for her to be defensive, because this is her first visit. She'll get used to it when she is old enough.

It's a good thing that baby Addy has healthy teeth. Kids at her age love to eat sweets, which give them cavities. Anyway, I think Addy will someday be willing to open her mouth for oral cleaning. It’s good that you’ve been bringing her to the dentist; this can teach her early on the importance of good oral hygiene. Also, you don't have to worry about her malocclusion for now; it can still improve once her teeth become permanent.

Well, it’s a good thing that as early as possible, you get to familiarize Addy with the dentist. In the long run, she’ll get used to having a dental check-up if this becomes a habit. :) What an excellent result, by the way. No cavities at all! It looks like Addy’s doing a perfect job of taking care of her teeth, and she has you to thank for that. :)
