I really thought I was going to get through this 31 for 21 challenge without having to say anything negative about people's view of Down syndrome. Well after school today we had to run to Wal Mart for a couple of things. While we were waiting in the check out line there was a table set up for people to get flu shots. There was a nurse (I'm assuming she was a nurse) that was at the table and she could not stop staring at Addy. It really ticked me off because it was a "isn't that a shame" type stare. Not the usual "oh my gosh that's the cutest kid I've ever seen" type stare. I don't understand the staring like that. I find myself staring at children with special needs because they fascinate me and I would love to go and talk and play with them. Not because I feel sorry for them or their families. I just don't get it.
Not five minutes later a couple got behind us in line. I have mentioned before that Addy is a male magnet and she was just grinning and waving at the man behind us. She will wave "hi" to someone about 50 billion times. Fortunately most people oblige her and keep telling her "hi". We are trying to teach her "just once" but it's not sinking in yet. The man was so nice and kept telling her "Hi" and I told him thanks for saying hi because she loves to say it over and over. He told me he it was fine, he was just so happy that she said "hi" to him and not his wife. You know what that %$#&^ said???? She said, "Yeah, she just said hi to you because she is one of those special kids and doesn't know any better." WHAT??? I was hacked, so glad that we were loading our groceries then I wanted to get away. I just looked at her and said "Oh she knows what she's doing, she knows friendly accepting people when she sees them." It's all I could come up with at the time. UGH!!! How can you not say hi to someone that is so enthusiastic about it??

You are amazing to not have said anything negative yet, boy, I sure have...Other peoples ignorance is never an excuse for being rude to our special kids, I wonder if those folks who say boneheaded things ever think about it after the incident, I am betting NO. Meghan used to say hi to everyone too, but she learned not everyone wants her to.
I got so sad when I realized she understood their rejection, when she was a toddler she was oblivious. :o( Sometimes this world is so depressing.
Ugh, so sorry you ran into THAT couple at the store.
Alayna is like Addy in her greeting people, she will continue to make eye contact with people until they greet her or they walk away it always interests me as to why someone would look at a cute toddler and not even crack a smile. Sad life they must be living....we say a prayer for them and their troubles and move on.
Cammie! That is unbelievable! :( Wow!
Crazy - so sorry you had to experience that. I just don't get people. Who couldn't love Addy?
Some people are so ignorant and hateful! The thing is, we should feel sorry for them...they are missing out on some great moments in life by being so negative! Sorry you and Addy had to deal with this! If I saw Addy at the store, I would be all over that girl! She is ADORABLE, LOVING and WAY TOO SWEET! Love and Hugs!
Blargh! I hate people like that.
I once had a woman yell at one of my campers because he looked at her. She said "YOU SHOULDNT SAY HI TO STRANGERS I COULD BE A BAD WOMAN WHO STEELS YOU AWAY!"
and then she yelled at me for letting him LOOK at her. He never uttered a word to her.
He cried.
My heart broke a little.
I think you handled it perfectly. Some people are just hateful.I hope I do as well as you when it happens to me.I haven't had to deal with anything like that yet.
