Bacterial Overgrowth

This is actually a pretty good pick of her distended little (big) belly! No she had not just eaten and yes it ALWAYS looks like that!

Dr. Tummy's office called from Kansas City today and Addy's Upper GI and small bowel study from 2/22 showed that she has an area of bacterial overgrowth. What does that mean? I have no clue! I just talked to his nurse and she didn't say. She just told me that he ordered her to be on Flagyl for 10 days. I have no clue if there's a follow up or what. So I went and picked up her med and one for Cooper then realized once I was in the car that hers was in tablet form. So back I go into the pharmacy and the pharmacist told me that Flagyl isn't made in liquid form. Which I find quite odd since she's been on Flagyl at least three times for C-Diff and all three times it was liquid! He said they probably made it special for her in the hospital pharmacy. Probably, that is where it came from. He did tell me that I can crush it up and dilute it in water and send it through her g-tube so hopefully we are good to go. Now only if I can find my pill crusher!

My mouth is just hanging open! That belly is huge!!! Shouldn't the doctors be freaking out when they see it? or is that not something you normally freak out about?
She must be so uncomfortable. This is not a new thing I remember you saying her belly was big quite some time ago.
Goodness, I'm saying a special prayer for Addy right now.

Oh my...I would be very concerned about that belly. Poor kid. Looks uncomfortable.

I've gotten liquid flagyl from several pharmacy's. Even our local little rinky dink small town pharmacy.

I'll keep Miss Addy in my prayers.

poor sweet love - sounds like you need to find a compounding pharmacy!

I hope that med helps her

Yup - looks like Christopher's tummy. It just means that the normal bacteria in her gut has multiplied out of control - either her immune system won't control it or there is just oo much. Anyway, they probably should have told you to cut out ANY carbs for awhile or it will just come back....the bacteria feeds on the carbohydrates and yeast, so no bread, crackers, etc. They even cut out rice cereal for Christopher. I would try to keep out the carbs until her antibiotic is done and then re-introduce them one at a time to see how she reacts. I know it is a pain. Otherwise, she is looking great!!!! :) BTW - I think that pharmacists was just lazy. They DO make liquid flagyl - it is not compounded - he just didn't want to re-do the script. :(

Love the rainbow shirt!
Glad you are getting some answers.
But, now I have a question...Anna's belly is huge also -- I often joke that she is 8-months pg. Should I be concerned? Her doc never said anything about it to me and I just assumed it was a result of low muscle tone in her abdominal muscles.
Was Addy having pain/discomfort with her belly? Or did you bring to your doc's attention because of its size?
...hmmmm - Anna will have her 2-yr. well visit next month. I will have to ask then.
